Are you getting the better value for the money?
Buying a super automatic espresso machine can be a big expense. We have received several questions regarding the issue of
getting the best product value in the $600-$1500 price range. We’ve examined many models, have selected two best selling ones, and have come up
with an overall recommendation.
Most fully automated brands and models are similar in their features: each one offers the ability to choose many different
settings, a rapid steam function that avoids waiting between pulling a shot of espresso and frothing the milk, and good ease of use.
The machines mostly vary from one another in the water reservoir capacity, color and finish. The real difference is often what
the consumer doesn’t think of during the buying process, such as the company’s customer service.
DeLonghi Magnifica ESAM 3300
This DeLonghi model is a great one for several reasons. First, it presents the least amount of warranty problem. The company
offers a 1-year full warranty, and after the first year, fantastic support is still readily available on the rare occasion it is needed. The ESAM
3300 also presents the benefit of having a cup warmer, a feature which tends to disappear in larger, commercial-grade models. The reservoir
capacity is 60 oz., which is slightly larger than in the other models we’ve examined.
Pro: For the Magnifica line of products, DeLonghi set up a special, white-glove customer service that has made
its reputation.
Con: It does not allow for brewing pre-ground coffee.
Note: If you buy a DeLonghi, make sure it’s in their Magnifica line of products: their superior after-sale
service is separate from the rest of the DeLonghi products.
Gaggia Syncrony Compact Digital
The main difference with the preceeding machine is the digital interface. It is programmable for different presets, which makes
it a popular machine in offices and spaces where there are many not-so-connoisseur users. This model has a 44 oz. water tank and the ability to
adjust the brew temperature. Espresso aromas are at their peak when it is brewed at a certain temperature, but some people just like their drink
very hot.
Pro: The Syncrony Digital has a bypass doser in addition to the whole bean compartment, which lets the user
brew coffee from pre-ground beans, for example when a guest would rather have decaf, and the beans in your machine are regular.
Con: If the digital display breaks down, you cannot use the machine at all, for lack of an interface, which is
not the case with the DeLonghi model.
A Note on Saeco
The Saeco company offers models with a designer touch that are as good and as well-equiped as the two described above, and
their customer service is also excellent. However, within a product category, prices tend to be higher than average.
Which one gives you the best value for your money?
At a price of $800, for its ease of use, product quality and never-let-you-down customer service, we recommend buying
